Thanks to all speakers!

Geek Collision v0.14 - Lightning talk sauna!

This time we are in luck: We where generously given a Sauna rental by cedx! The sauna is on next Tuesday  29.11 starting after 18:00. The sauna is Jyväskylän City Sauna.

Also people have asked for lighting talk session  and this is a great opportunity to do that as well!

This  comes quite quickly, but there is no reason to stress about if you want to present something. The topics can be anything geeky and they don't have to be long. You can just talk about your pet project for one minute or pitch your favorite programming language for ten minutes. Anything goes! You can read more about Lightning talks from Wikipedia.

Leave a comment if you want to do a talk so we can prepare for it.

After the talks we can after match the topics until 4.0am. The venue has a flat screen for presenting purposes. I will bring a laptop which can be used with it. City Sauna provides towels for us. You can bring your own sauna drinks with you. You can also throw one for cedx for providing this sauna greatness for us for free :)

The sauna has limited space so rspv in this doodle if you are coming: http://www.doodle.com/dhnap264fkmeaacq first come first served.

v0.4.1 - Node.js (change of location)

I'm happy to announce that we have confirmed the location and time for the next Geek collision, which is 28.06.2011 18:00. And as I already informed the presentation will be about Node.js which is part of the future of server side JavaScript by Esa-Matti "Epeli" Suuronen and we are generously hosted by Jaakko Vallo alias jazzu from Oikotie Oy in Oikotie Oy offices which are located in Survontie 9 just in Ylistönrinne, at the Technopolis end of the building.

Since we had a change of the event location I'm sad to say, but the steamy style of the event won't continue. You can still bring your own snacks and drinks along.

This time we might have to limit the attendance so that only the first 20 will be able to attend, so register soon: http://www.doodle.com/25ybd7a68wdya26s.

P.S. If you have problems finding the place or are arriving late call my cell +358445815816. See you there!

Geek collision is calling geeks to arms to find us a place for our next 28.6.2011 meet!

Hello my fellow geeks!

As we have stumbled on a bit of a hassle with our next events location policy, I'm pleading all of you who are interested in coming to Geek collision to consider if you would be able to host us. As we are organising an event just because we're interested in learning and sharing information for free, we also want the event to be as accessible as possible, so keeping it free is important.

Our needs are pretty basic, a room that fits about 20 people and has a projector. If you provide such a place and would be willing to host us, you'd make me and others that attend to this event very happy. We'll of course mention you on the blog and you'd get good name in the local geek community.

So, if you would be so kind and like to host us, please inform me at tarmo@geekcollision.org ASAP.

v0.4 - Node.js and sauna, 28.06.2011 18:00

Summery hello to all you geeks!

I'm happy to announce that we have confirmed the location and time for the next Geek collision, which is 28.06.2011 18:00. And as I already informed the presentation will be about Node.js which is part of the future of server side JavaScript by Esa-Matti "Epeli" Suuronen and we are again generously hosted by Jukka Raimovaara alias xdanger from Mentalhouse Oy and TNNet in TNNet offices which are located in Kauppakatu 32 which is just behind Hemingways.

The steamy style of the event will continue since there's also a sauna possibility and as I expect all of you are good hitchhikers and have towel with you as always, I'm not even going to mention that you should bring one along. You should also bring your own drinks along.

This time we might have to limit the attendance so that only the first 20 will be able to attend, so register soon: http://www.doodle.com/25ybd7a68wdya26s.

P.S. The door which you are coming in has a TNNet sticker and there's a door bell which says: "Kokoushuone", buzz that to get in. If you have problems finding the place or are arriving late call my cell +358445815816. See you there!

Another event down, next is coming

Yesterdays event was just awesome. We talked about a lot about web technologies. Experienced the cool HTML 5 Canvas presentation by Juho Vepsäläinen for which you can find slides from his blog http://nixtu.blogspot.com/2011/06/presentation-intro-to-html5-canvas.html. Thank you Juho!

After the presentation we continued the discussions in the sauna about what is the appropriate language to teach programming where Python as well as JavaScript got a lot of votes. I don't know if we actually reached conclusion but at least good conversation came about. Sauna, game development, WebGL, CoffeeScript, Server side JavaScript and other subjects kept some of us up until late and gave us new ideas for presentations and sessions.

The next event will be in two weeks and the presentation will be about Node.js by Esa-Matti "Epeli" Suuronen and hopefully we can arrange it in the TNNet premises which were just perfect.

Thanks Jukka Raimovaara and TNNet for hosting us and thank you geeks for attending. Next time bring your friends with you!

Geek collision 0.3v is on Tuesday 14.06.2011 at 18.00 in Kauppakatu 32 (behind Hemingways)

Hello, hello!

I've been a bit busy so I didn't really blog about the last event, but it's already old news so let's concentrate on the new and upcoming event. In the next event Juho Vepsäläinen alias bebraw is going to give us an hour long presentation about HTML 5 Canvas element. We have changed venue and are generously hosted by Jukka Raimovaara alias xdanger from Mentalhouse Oy and TNNet in TNNet offices which are located in Kauppakatu 32 which is just behind Hemingways.

The event might be also steamier than usually since there's also a sauna possibility and as I expect all of you are good hitchhikers and have towel with you as always, I'm not even going to mention that you should bring one along.

Oh yeah and remember to tell me if you're coming: http://www.doodle.com/e4vug4d829fv2nfd.

Since the office is behind locked doors somebody is going to need to open the door, so you can call my cell +358445815816 if you arrive late. See you there!

Geek collision saga begins!

So we had our first ever meeting and there was altogether 12 attendees. It was more than I actually expected... There was introductions, interesting discussions about technology and work culture, some trolling of course, but all in all the mood was very open and apt for this kind of event. Nobody even complained about the venue! We also got down some ideas about future events and decided that the pace should be every two weeks, so that we maintain continuity. All the events will be announced in Twitter, Facebook and here on the blog, also a calendar entry and a wiki page of every event will be created.

Since the first event was just a seed of things to come, it's likely that the form of the gathering will vary, but the events will probably be mostly either just discussions over a pint or somewhat of a presentation, with maybe some hands on type of a deal. We'll see where it settles. The idea is to be informal and open - share information among local geeks and to network.

I put up a wiki type of a site so that sharing information is easy, it can be found at http://wiki.geekcollision.org.

Keep looking at this blog and Twitter. See you at the next Geek collision!

What is a geek collision?

Geek collision is a social event for people working in IT field in Jyväskylä. The idea is just to meet people for a pint of beer and talk about what ever. There's no agenda at least for the first event besides just socialising.

The "organiser" is me, Tarmo Aidantausta (http://twitter.com/bleadof and http://twitter.com/geekcollision). I've been thinking about arranging some sort of informal event for IT people in Jyväskylä for quite a while and this is an attempt to make it happen.

Come, meet people and converse, maybe over a pint of good beer. http://doodle.com/v6kzbkertkcndhq9

P.S. If you have any questions, you can ask them here on comments or contacting me at tarmo@geekcollision.org .
